Shiny Sink

If you caught my New Years's Resolutions/Goals post, you might remember that I'm working on generally decluttering and cleaning the house. We're about a month and a half into this year and I've felt overwhelmed and successful in equal measure. After I put the post up, a friend suggested that I check out FlyLady, and once I'd spent enough time poking around, I decided to work on each month's habit for the whole year. January was Shine Your Sink month and I'm happy to report that my sink is still shiny after it's initial soak and scrub.

Shiny sink!
More than that, putting in the effort to make the sink shiny and clean has made me more apt to keep it that way. Something about taking pride in your work, I think. When I put Cecilia down for her naps now, instead of heading straight for my laptop or my book, the first thing I do is go to the sink and do the dishes. That way nothing can get dried on and crusty and I never feel overwhelmed by a huge pile of dishes at 7 or 8 pm when I don't have any energy left for the day.

February's habit is less discrete and started out as an overwhelming concept. This month the goal is to spend at least 15 minutes a day organizing something. At first, I didn't know where to start but then I realized that I should start with something small and attach the 15 minutes to the end of a dish-doing session, thus I ended up in the kitchen as it sees the most use on a daily basis. So far, I feel like all I ever get to organize is the kitchen because like I just said, it sees the most use. But I think I'm making (tiny) in-roads on other areas of the house because I was finally able to get the foyer cleared of clutter today.

My goal has evolved a little bit; as the year progresses, I'm aiming to continue to chain together each month's habit. With luck and hard work, I'll hopefully have to invest less daily time to keep the house clean.
