Midyear Goal Review

A month later than I'd intended but here it is.
  • Health and Fitness Goals
    • Running
      • Run three 5Ks (May/August/November)
I did one on May 1st though I never recapped it, August isn't looking to be that likely, but we'll see. November is still happening though, even if I have to walk it!
    • Weight Loss
      • Get back to my goal weight and stay in my preferred range.
I'm 10-15lbs from my end range, but there's still several months to go before 2016 closes out. I'm not really worried and I'm still committed to it.
  • Photography
    • Pick a theme each month and take weekly photos in that theme for Photo Friday.
I have been massively failing at this, mostly because I forgot that it was even a goal. I'd say that I'll try to be better about it but honestly, I'll probably forget about it once I put this post up. Oops.
  • Crafts
    • Sewing
      • Make Eric's fleece PJ pants with pockets
      • Sew Cecilia a little fleece jacket with a zipper
I haven't even taken out my sewing machine or serger since before I wrote my original goal post in January but I definitely haven't forgotten about this one. I'm currently devising a craft table organization strategy that involves a trip to IKEA this week which should be fun (or possibly harrowing?) with just myself and the toddler.
    • Knitting
      • Finish three of my Dyed My Way kits from KnitCrate.
I doubt this is going to happen but it could, I guess. I'm not willing to discount the possibility yet. I just finished dyeing my first kit but it took me forever to wind it into a ball, and I'm sure it'll take me twice as long to get the toe-up cast-on right for the pair of socks it's planned for.
  • House
    • Build the raised bed garden that I've wanted for a good two years now.
Done and the garden is doing wonderfully! I just finished harvesting all of the potatoes and I'm extremely pleased with the results.
    • Declutter, organize and deep clean. (I'm sure Eric is laughing as he reads this since I've been assigned the task of cleaning the bathroom counter for over a month now.)
I think I've made decent progress on this. I've gotten rid of all of Eric's old DVDs, donated several bags of clothes that neither of us wear anymore, organized the pantry closets and assembled a wire shelving unit in the basement to store all of the paper products. I've got a lot more projects in my queue but I do seem to be making steady (but excruciatingly slow) progress.
  • Personal
    • Keep the grocery budget in check. I think we spend too much on groceries and I know that I can do a better job.
I don't have the exact figures in front of me right now but last time I ran them (in June), we were averaging about $30 less a month on our total grocery bill which translated to around $180 of total savings for the year. I'm sure that I could still do better but for now I'm pleased with the results.
    • Read 100 books! I'm doing the Goodreads 2016 challenge.
I'm 19 books behind schedule as of right now, so it's pretty unlikely that I'll catch up. We'll just have to wait and see!

Cecilia: 15 Months

Cecilia's personality becomes more and more evident with each passing month. She thrives on routine and will intentionally do things that I forget to do when she's understood an established pattern. Everything must be just so and in it's proper place. Often in the morning when we come down to breakfast, she sees that the tray of her high chair is drying in the bottom rack of the dishwasher and she will immediately go to it, pick it up and bring it to me so that I can put it where it belongs. I'm hopeful that she'll keep this organizational skill as she gets older!

mama, why must we do this?
mama, this is boring.
smile? mama, I think you meant to say "eat your toes!"

No Deer (or Rabbits) Allowed!

Back when we bought our house, I was excited about the prospect of a garden despite the overwhelming amount of work that it was going to take to sort out the mess that was, and currently is, the weeden.
Dear weeden, I hate you.
Maybe at one time, for people who have more time than a working mom, that garden worked pretty well.

It does not work for me at all, and I realized that even before I turned into said working mom. When it also became clear to me that in addition to overwhelming amount of weeds, we also had an overwhelming amount of vermin (rabbits, deer, burrowing rodentia), I decided that it was time to design a garden that would work for me. I started by drafting up the basic idea in a spreadsheet, which helped me get the idea out of my head but didn't really give me that much perspective.  Thus, I got a little crafty:

The original plan had flower boxes on the front, which after a discussion with my parents, got nixed due to ground levelness. You may note that my plan also lacked a door mostly because I had no idea where to start and partly because I figured it could wait until it was actually constructed for a better fit.

Finally, 1.5 years, pregnancy and a baby later, the garden has become a reality. My dad and brother were instrumental in the construction and I can't thank them enough!

Easy access to water and the house
There is a giant rock where the posts for the gate are set, so my parents designed a gate that can be latched in place and lifted out to prevent wear and tear on both the door and the posts. It's made completely of cedar so it's nice and light!
I bought raised bed corners that came with a soaker hose attachment because I knew that I wanted to use garden mats from gardenmats.com. I have two rows of potatoes and a row of beans in this picture.
Peppers and tomatoes which have grown a ton since I took this picture a week and a half ago.
My mom bought me this squirrel as a gift back when I first came up with the garden plan.
I'm glad it finally has a home.
I moved my strawberry planter in and have two different varieties plus some companion plants (borage).
It's also covered in obnoxious plastic mesh because there are SO MANY BIRDS.

I'm pleased to have seen this garden go from a thought in my head to real life, granted it took many more people than just me to make it happen, but that doesn't make it any less cool to me. It makes gardening a manageable hobby for me; I'm looking forward to eating anything it yields. It's also something I look forward to sharing with Cecilia, who is currently fascinated by everything about it.

Cecilia: 14 Months

I'll keep the words short this month. Toddlers are fun but they are also tiny whirlwinds that must take all-the-things apart. Oh, and toss all the food on the floor half-chewed with a wet splat that my ears are currently keyed for. Regardless of the perpetual state of destruction my house now remains in, and the unending task of cleaning that damned high chair (yes, I think the high chair has taken the place of the medicine ball from last year), we're having a lot of fun.
mama, dada is being silly behind you!
mama, I am contemplating life right now, please stop photographing me.
of course I am not contemplating mischief mama!

Cecilia: 13 Months

Yup, this post is basically a month late. It's been so long that I don't even recall any cute little stories, oops. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you don't actually read and just look at the pictures) that means, this post will just be pictures.

mama, I don't want to take this picture today. *cries*
but mama, I'm tired and I'm cranky and I don't want to take this picture!

*yawn* see I told you I was tired!

Total Loss: 31.4

Diet
I didn't do a great job this last month; my heart just wasn't in it and my motivation level has waned. I knew that I had this Transformer in the bag and I know that didn't help. However, I did not have my other Transformer round in the bag and I failed that one's current round. I'm mad at myself for letting it happen but I'm trying to channel my anger into productivity and plan my eating better. It's working so far, but I still have two weeks to go before the next weigh-in.

Exercise
I finally conceded defeat with regards to planning my own training for the 5K on May 1st; I don't have time to do a good enough job so I signed up for a training plan with RunKeeper. I'm loving not having to do anything except follow the planned runs.

Cecilia and Mommy: 12 Months

I can hardly believe it; Cecilia is one year old now! It's so amazing that she's gone from a screeching little baby to an adorable, goofy little toddler all in the span of 52 weeks. There's nothing I currently enjoy more than watching her toddle around the house, exploring, investigating and just generally checking it all out.  A year ago, I was just trying to survive but now I'm enjoying it all and looking for fun activities we can do together.
Oh hi Mama! I got my posse and my balloon with me.

Really Mama? We have to do this again? Didn't you get the shot the first time?
Likes
  • Food! She likes so many different things now: eggs, cheese, prunes, strawberries, yogurt. She's gotten really good at chewing.
  • Her Wubbanub pacifiers
  • Mister Lamby and he still needs a bath, badly.
  • Tiny Panda - she's kind of obsessed with tiny panda.
  • Her favorite bath toy, Mister Beavy the Purple Beaver
  • Pandas in general
  • Books - she's currently obsessed with Chu's Day by Neil Gaiman which shockingly (not) features a panda
  • Playing Hide and Seek with Mama and peeking around corners
  • Playing with Charlie - she still likes to feed him treats and he still treats her like his life will end if he accidentally hurts her
  • Walking all over the house, she's a free range baby! She loves to stand and look out our sliding glass doors and look for birds.
  • Dusting - she's memorized where Grammy stores the Swiffer duster and will walk into her room after Grammy has left for the week, steal it from the drawer and dust things.
Dislikes
  • Having her nails trimmed - I don't think this is ever going to change, or maybe it will when she understands the concept but then maybe it'll just be a battle of wills. Who knows.
  • Bananas
  • Having her face wiped

Basic Baby Stats
  • Weight: 16lbs 15oz (+5.2 oz)
  • Length: 29.25" (+0.5")
  • Head Circumference:45.3 cm (+1.3 cm)

Mommy
I'm in such a completely different head space today than I was a year ago and it's pretty astonishing. I don't really have much more to say about me so I think for the second year of these posts, we're going to leave off the Mommy portion!

Diet
I didn't really do as good a job with logging this past month as I should have. I let it fall by the wayside for a good week and a half around my birthday and since Februray's a pretty short month a week and a half is a pretty big blow to my schedule. I'm actually at a bit of a weird place with my diet right now, tired of all the planning it takes but so close to my prepregnancy weight that I feel guilty for not having the required motivational level to push through and just do it.

Fitness
I registered for a race on May 1st! I'm excited to get back to running. Don't have much else to talk about in here right now.

Cecilia and Mommy: 11 Months

Every month, I feel like Cecilia does something more amazing than the previous one. She learns so fast. She absorbs knowledge like a tiny sponge and you can see her little mind processing at times. I love teaching her and I love that she's already obsessed with books even if it means I have to read the same book to her over, and over, and over and over. Seeing all of her development makes the hard parts (massively disrupted night time sleep for most of the month) completely worth it. She's my sweet little mischief maker who likes to copy Mommy's facial expressions and Grammy's cleaning habits. I'm sure the coming months will bring us even more joy.
hey mama! there's someone behind the couch!

seriously mama? seriously?

mama! read it again!

She's got a good zombaby walk.

Likes
  • Prunes, she'll pound an entire package of pureed prunes. I don't understand this child.
  • Her Wubbanub pacifiers because for some inexplicable reason, she suddenly realized she liked them.
  • Mister Lamby - he needs a bath. badly.
  • Her bed time routine! She has it completely memorized to the point where I can take her to the crib with Mister Lamby and her pacifier, and when prompted will drop both her pacifier and Mister Lamby into the crib. She can also be prompted to pick up each item (sleep sack, jammies, towel) and do the correct thing with it.
  • Books even more so this month, and particularly Peas On Earth. I think I read it to her 10 times this past Sunday.
  • Playing Hide and Seek with Mama
  • Pilfering one single sheet of toilet paper to pet, crunch and wipe the floor with, sometimes she'll throw it in the toilet if prompted
  • Feeding Charlie treats from the bag - it's so cute to watch him take the treat delicately from her as if she were made of glass. He's such a good dog!
  • Walking all over the playroom - she's still scared to walk in larger areas like the kitchen but I'm sure that this will change over the course of the next month.
  • Wiping the floor, the dishwasher, the fridge, mommy's feet and Charlie with a paper towel. Apparently Grammy is teaching her how to be clean.
Dislikes
  • Having her nails trimmed - is this ever going to get less horrible? I can only hope so.
  • Bananas
Mommy
This month has been hard; truly exhausting and, occasionally, frustrating. Dealing with the disrupted sleep was easier for me to handle when she was younger because I knew that she needed to eat to grow and because I wasn't working. Now though, it's harder for me to deal with my feelings of frustration because I know that she doesn't need to wake up. And while I know that in her mind, she's terrified because I'm not there with her, or that her teeth hurt or maybe she had a bad dream, it's still hard to not be at least a little frustrated. Fortunately, the last few days have been much improved and we are almost back to her normal, at least until her next disrupted sleep phase!
