Spring has finally sprung!

My first race of the season is on Sunday at 9AM and I'm hoping to beat last year's time by at least 30 seconds. We'll see!

Wish me luck. :)

Thursday Tips: 5 Common Weight Loss Mistakes

Image: sundayhill / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

1. Not eating enough
Less is not always more when it comes to food intake. If you eat too little, your body will hold on tightly to what you are giving it and you won't shed a pound.  In order to know if you're eating too little (or too much), logging what you eat it is paramount.  There are free websites available to anyone who registers (DailySpark or Livestrong) and there are paid websites like Calorie King.  All of these sites help you set a target and allow to you see if you are making it.

2. Only doing cardio
Without a doubt, cardio is great for burning calories and getting your heart in shape.

Kitchen Adventures: Orange-Almond Biscotti

I had a bit of free time last night so I leafed through the pages of Baking Illustrated in hopes of finding a quick recipe for ingredients that I happened to have on hand. Unfortunately that meant no pies, brownies, or anything that required unsweetened chocolate. Towards the end of the cookie chapter, I came across this biscotti recipe.

Mmm, coffee and a biscotti!

My Mom and Dad came by on Saturday and brought
these miniature daffodils with them. :)

It feels like this week has lasted an eternity. I suspect it's because my body spent the first half of the week being profoundly confused as to what time of the day it was, or even what day it was.

(It's Friday, right?)

Thursday Tips: 6 Reasons You Should Be Running

1. It's easy!
You don't need much to get started. All you need is a good pair of running shoes (and a good sports bra if you're a woman). You should get fitted for your running shoes at a shoe store because everyone's feet are different and different shoes cater to different quirks.

2. And yet so hard.
Very few other physical activities burn as many calories per minute as running does. It's one of the main reasons so many people take up running as a way to lose weight.

3. Happy Knees

Kitchen Adventures: Snickerdoodles

The history of the snickerdoodle is uncertain at best. Some claim it came from German bakers, while others mark the Dutch as responsible. There's also some who claim the whimsically named cookie originated in New England. Regardless of where the Snickerdoodle has its roots, it's basically a sugar cookie leavened by utilizing cream of tartar as it's acid component.

It's pretty darn tasty too.

Cinnamon, sugary, buttery goodness

A Squirrel In Norway: Homeward Bound!

I've stayed in the airport hotel many times now, but
this is the first time I've actually gotten a different
style of room decor. This is Oriental.

Weekly Weigh-In: 4/15/2011

No weigh in this week! No access to a scale. Next week for sure though.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall, it's been a good trip to Norway. I was able to complete 90% of the work they assigned to me, which is more than I think they thought I would. I even got called out in the Raytheon internal New England software department weekly newsletter! Apparently, I'm doing an exceptional and super job.  Personally I just think I'm doing a good job, and that's good enough for me.

I'm heading up to Gardermoen this afternoon, to drop off the tiny rental car and check-in at the airport hotel. My flight leaves at 6:30AM CEST tomorrow, so that means I have to be at the gate by like really fricking early o'clock.  I've been checking my seats on the second leg of my trip from Amsterdam neurotically all week. I keep trying to get them to assign me to a row of two seats which are currently empty, but they won't allow it yet. Hopefully, I'll be able to change them at the self check-in kiosk tomorrow when I get my tickets! I'd love to be able to have a row to myself again.

Though, frankly, how far back I end up sitting on the plane doesn't matter much. Logan's got the slowest baggage claim service ever. I've had times where I end up waiting forever in the Customs line (~20 minutes) and belt won't even have started yet.

Next Monday's post will be the second part of the two-part A Squirrel In Norway series, entitled A Squirrel Returns Home from Norge! Original, I know. :)

Narcissus and the Mirror

Greek mythology tells us of a man named Narcissus.

Narcissus was proud and beautiful, shunning those who would love him. One such shunned women prayed to the gods and goddesses of Olympus that Narcissus should feel the agony of truly unrequited love. Her prayer was heard by an avenging goddess and thus came Narcissus to a placid, beautiful, shining pool of water. Gazing into the water, he became so enamored of himself that he refused to leave the pool for food or rest. Every time he attempted to touch the object of his affections, it would flee from him in ripples of water. Narcissus pined for his love, eventually fading until he was forced to cross the Stygian river into Hades' domain.

You're probably wondering why I'm talking about Narcissus.

The PSP Workout

All that time I spent creating a body weight workout?

Wasted. I'm not even going to use it today.

Why?

I decided the simpler, the better. When the acronym PSP popped into my mind as I was thinking about what I would do tonight, I knew I'd hit the mark.

  • Push ups,

  • Squats,

  • Planks

or PSP as I've shortened it.  These three exercises are ranked among the most effective, and if you're short on space, time or equipment, they're especially ideal.  Tonight I alternated 2 minute sets of each exercise with 1 minute of rest for a total of 30 minutes and my arms feel like jelly.

Sometimes you just have to keep it simple!

Approximately 9 hours and one plane
transfer later, I arrive at Gardermoen airport.

Weekly Weigh-In: 4/8/11

Weight: 125.8
Body Fat: 20.8% + 3 = 23.8%
Measurements: 34"-26"-34"-17.5"
----------------------------------------------

I think that I would be lying if I attributed this week's upward swing to my period and a lot of tough workouts with water retention. My diet (I mean this in the truest sense of the word, the food one consumes) has been off with too many overindulgences. It's time to nip that trend in the bud. I've already figured out the reasoning behind the chocolate chips, so now it's time to start making little changes to get my diet back to where it should be.

Thursday Tips: Top those Taters right!

Stuff that potato with the right toppings and reap the benefits!  Studies show that the intake of vitamins B6 and B9 (a.k.a folate or folic acid) help reduce the instance of cardiovascular diseases.

Fitness Traveling

I've written about exercising while on travel (see: Staying Confident) before, but that was more applicable to an extended duration.

The Curious Case of the Chocolate Chips

I spend a significant amount of time mulling over thoughts in my own head.

I enjoy the mental stimulation of learning and pursuing new and interesting ideas, concepts and skills. And I've now come to realize that many of the unfinished projects for my various hobbies aren't exactly unfinished.

I pick up new projects to learn specific things. Once I've thoroughly learned that skill, I want to move onto the next one.

Let's take knitting for example, I have a plethora of unfinished objects stuffed into a plastic bin. I could pick up each object in that bin and tell you why I decided to make it, and when I got bored with it. Honestly though? I have no desire to pick them up and finish them.

Why?

Spring? Is that you?

Nope. I guess not.
No spring yet, so I settled on a new pair of
pretty shiny shoes!
Perhaps Norway will be more springy...here's hoping.
Next Monday will be loaded with Norway pics!
