Is regain inevitable?

I certainly don't believe so.

I've written about maintenance before (see: When is it time to stop logging your food? and My Brain on Maintenance) but a post on the CK forums today sparked this particular blog entry.

Personally, I think it's absolutely ridiculous to expect that you can stop logging your food (and start eating intuitively) the moment you cross that coveted threshold from weight loss to weight maintenance.

If you intuitively understood how much to eat to maintain your weight and didn't have a preexisting medical condition , then you wouldn't have gained weight in the first place.  I also believe that maintaining isn't attempting to adhere to a specific number on the scale. A range, with a ceiling and a floor, is a much better idea. As long as you fall within your range, you are okay.

Ultimately, weight loss maintenance is about not growing complacent. I don't promote constant vigilance, but you're going to have to be vigilant about 80% of the time. It isn't easy, and I don't know if it will ever get any easier, but I'm going to keep right on trying.
