I've had a niggling thought for the last few months, something that's been irritating me but is difficult to pin down exactly why.

This morning, however, I finally figured it out.

Throughout my life, I have known several people who claim that they just have a sarcastic sense of humor.  This is what they say after they deliver a cutting jibe or taunt that they claim I simply take what they're saying  too literally. I've even done this in the past.

I'm calling bullsh!t.

Let us first define sarcasm, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

Definition of SARCASM

: a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain
a : a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual
b : the use or language of sarcasm
Seems to me that by definition, sarcasm is essentially a rude way to interact with other people.  This is not to say it doesn't have a place in your daily interactions with other humans. However, if you are claiming to use sarcasm in a situation that is neither satirical nor ironic, then you're not being sarcastic. You're just being a jerk; don't try claim that someone is taking you too literally.

So the next time you go to open your mouth to say something "sarcastic," pause for a moment, think about whether sarcasm is truly appropriate for the situation.  If you don't have anything nice to say to someone, don't say anything at all.
