A Pictorial: My busy weekend

I was up at 6:45 AM on Saturday to start the cleaning and cooking prep for my little brother's birthday:
At 20, he's not so little anymore.

We had tea, crumpets, and finger sandwiches.
The crumpets were a hit.
I learned that crumpets are basically made of pancake batter with yeast as leavening.  We topped our crumpets with ginger, apricot or strawberry preserves from the made by the monks of Spencer Abbey in Spencer, MA. Dear Monks of Spencer Abbey, you make some rockin' preserves!
My self-styled centerpiece complete with stolen foil leaf thing.

The little brother opened his gifts and then he and my mom watched the first episode of The Walking Dead. They were absolutely enthralled.  After the first episode, they departed and Eric came by so that we could celebrate his birthday.  I got Eric Darth Vader's Tie Fighter Lego Kit, which he promptly put together moments after tearing the paper off.

pew pew!
Luke, I am your father.

While Eric was assembling his Legos, I started preparing the meal of the evening.

Lemon and Garlic Roasted Cornish Hen
with Rosemary Roasted Potatoes and Bacon-Shallot Peas

I did not use a single recipe in the preparation of this meal, which is a first for me.  I love precision and not using the kitchen scale to measure out predefined measurements of ingredients felt a tiny bit liberating.

We finished the night off with a wonderful cake made by yours truly.

Lychee Butter Cake with a kiwi-fruit syrup

A successful, productive and yet highly exhausting weekend on the whole.
