The Aftermath

I'm sitting here (re)watching the first episode of Firefly in that post-race sleepy haze. The kitchen is a royal disaster and my bedroom could use some tidying, but frankly I'm too tired.  I've had a pretty busy weekend.  My virtual running "helper" stopped by on Friday and suggested three different types of workouts for me to use when I start training for my 5K in Disney World on January 5th.  It was quite helpful and I look forward to incorporating them into a 7-week training plan come November. After virtual running helper left, I set to baking my mom's birthday cake.  It was a strawberry cake with a swiss meringue buttercream and tiny marizpan strawberries:

I made the marzipan strawberries by hand about a month ago and froze them to save myself time. I was quite pleased with the results!

The race I have been stressing about for the last two weeks was today at 10AM in Concord.  I decided to go gadgetless (i.e. no watch, no heart rate monitor) for the entire race. I treated the race as just a regular run, and didn't focus on any numbers at all.  I finished in 28:49 which is better than my first race of the season but not as good as my second.  It was extremely hot, and the course was in the direct sunlight for most of it race. I got a brief respite of shade on the trail but it was over too soon. I got a wicked calf cramp in my right calf after the race, and it's still very sore.  I've got another race in a couple of weeks (9/11 in Northborough), I'm hoping to be 100% by then.

After that, it's back to base building for me for a couple of months.  I'm looking forward to it, running just for the sheer joy of running is awesome.  I'm also looking forward to getting back to a stable eating schedule, now that I'm no longer sick.
