Impatiently awaiting Saturday

Fortunately, I don't think I'm getting sick but one of my ears is still wonky. It just feels like it has cotton stuffed in it, and I can hear myself louder in that ear than the other. It's really annoying but on the whole I feel marginally better than I did yesterday.

Since it's my last week here and I have this tradition of going to my absolute favorite Italian restaurant ever, my coworkers and I went out to dinner at Felini in Drammen last night. They make their pastas by hand and have the most delicious ravioli!  I had the Ravioli Alla Toscana which is strips of beef, garlic, tomato sauce, pesto sauce, white wine, basil and chilli in a creamy sauce.  It was a very rich dish, but for some reason it didn't upset my stomach at all.

Afterwards, we took a stroll down Drammen's riverside promenade and we came across this thing called a river harp:

There's an explanation on how it works next to the harp, but I'm not exactly an acoustics engineer so the Braille above it was as useful to me as the explanation in English was. It sounded pretty, I guess, but I think if it were dark out it'd sound pretty creepy.

After our walk, we stopped at the grocery store so I could get some more yogurt, bananas and broccoli for the remaining couple of days I have here. I'm pretty proud of myself, I didn't feel awkward at all paying for my food and I actually knew what she meant when she said, "Vil du en posen?"  After the grocery store, I came back to the dorms and went out for a quick circuit training workout.

I haven't been doing my yoga as much as I should, but I did run through the warmup set twice last night just to get a stretch in after the circuit training workout. Tonight I've got a 10K treadmill run scheduled and I will probably do the yoga workout for Wednesday because it focuses on balance.

I came back from work yesterday feeling a little stuffy in the head.  I also seem to have a touch of the same kind of hearing problem I had before I left for Norway.  I decided those factors were enough to warrant me switching up my Thursday day off with Monday. I really do not want to be sick again, as I was pretty miserable the last three days I was sick here.  I took some vitamin C that one of my coworkers brought with him so perhaps that will help a little bit.

My little can of oats is nearly empty, in fact it only has enough servings in it for three more days. Yay! That means home soon!

One handful of days to go!

I have that funny "traveling soon" feeling in the pit of my stomach. Which is normally accompanied by a sense of dread when I'm leaving the states, but right now it's accompanied by a feeling of excited impatience. I can already tell I'm hardly going to be able to sleep on Friday night! I'll have to remember to set a wake-up call.

I purchased a  Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine to read on the plane on the way here.  It's got some decent tips and a few good recipes that I'm interested in trying out when I get home.  But man, the women in that magazine are so ripped I almost think they don't really look very feminine anymore.  Women are supposed to have some body fat!

The recipes are mostly for protein shakes, which I'm not sure how I really feel about.  I know that I would like to get more protein in my diet and some of those shakes look really good, but I'm just not sure that it's the best method of increasing my protein intake.  I did some internet research and it looks to me as though I need somewhere between 54-100g of protein daily.  Out here in Norway, I've been woefully under that number. I'm definitely going to have to perform some tweaks here and there to get it to where it needs to be when I return home.

6 days and counting!

I went into Oslo yesterday with a couple of my coworkers to sightsee. It was a good way to spend the day, and it definitely made the time pass more quickly.  Unfortunately for me though, I seem to have a mildly injured foot caused referred pain on the inside of of my right knee.  I cut the day trip a little short and came back to the dorms around 5.  I spent most of the night trying to stretch my leg out and figure out why my foot/knee hurt.  I think that it's a product of not enough foot/calf stretching which sucks, but at least I can work on fixing it.

I only got through 15 minutes of my pilates DVD yesterday in addition to the 16400 steps I walked, but I think with a mild injury that's okay by me.

I've only got six more days left in Norway and the countdown is on! I'm already planning how my Friday will go. :)

Lazy day!

I took yesterday off, the first day off of working out that I've had in a full seven days.  It's much easier to stick to a workout plan when you have nothing better to do.  Thanks for that Norway. I've got the Friday yoga workout and a 45 minute run planned for today.  The yoga workout today is based around back-bending poses and the little stick figures in my book look a little bit like pretzels.  Hopefully I won't injure myself doing any of these, I'll have to be careful.

Today would normally have been my weigh-in day at home, so I busted out the good old tape measure and took my measurements.  34"-26.5-34", yay! At least I am consistent, but I certainly do miss having my weight and using my handheld body fat monitor.

I'm planning to go into Oslo tomorrow and do some sight-seeing with my coworkers.  Perhaps, I'll even convince/allow them to take some photographs of me in Oslo!

Can it be home time yet?

I miss the normality of my life!

I want my peanut butter, and I want my scale. I want non-cream based food!

Lack of internets make squirrels crabby!

The internet died for the first time last night.  I'm hoping this isn't a trend, but at the very least it motivated me to push a little harder on my run than I would have normally.

I managed 10K in 66:39 on the treadmill last night putting me at roughly a 10:45min/mile pace, which isn't too awful.  I'm pretty sure I can do better than that, but I'm going to have to start plotting my runs a little better when I get back to get truer distances for recording purposes. I want to be able to complete that Running With the Wolves 10K in a reasonable amount of time!

Since I didn't do my yoga yesterday morning, I attempted it after my run.  I was able to complete the four warmup rounds but only managed to get through one round of the actual Tuesday workout.  I overslept again today (I'm sensing a trend here) and didn't manage to get up until 7:15.  I decided I'd rather have fresh warm oats than do yoga, so I didn't work through the Wednesday workout this morning.

I am planning on doing the Wednesday yoga workout today after my circuit training.  It's apparently a set of poses to help you work on balance, so it should be pretty interesting for someone like me.  I anticipate falling over a few times.

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

I woke up at 6:30 this morning, only to silence my watch and proceed to immediately fall back asleep for another hour.  I didn't even have time to make my precious lovely oats, so I definitely did not have time to go through the Tuesday yoga workout.  I am planning to do it after my 60 minutes of running today, which will be done on the treadmill due to my hesitation with the Norwegian countryside.  I don't want to be attacked by any random moose or lynx. I honestly have no idea how legitimate my fear of lynx and moose is but I think it's just easier to stay indoors right now.

On a side note, I really dearly miss weighing in on Friday mornings.  I hate not having that weekly feedback about how I'm doing nutritionally.  I've been using my tape measure and going by how my clothes fit but I miss knowing my actual weight and body fat percentage.  I only have two more Friday weigh-ins to miss and I'll just have to continue being cautious with the Norwegian lunch foods.  It seems like everything here is loaded with full fat milk or butter! They certainly love their creamy sauces.

Lately I find myself very inflexible.

Physical inflexibility is easily remedied however and to that end I've decided that my goal for this week is to follow every daily yoga workout in my Om Yoga book. Each day starts out with a series of warm up poses which should be completed four times, and then proceeds on into the meat of the workout.  Today's workout was the Sun Saluation of which I did two rounds, one for the left and one for the right.

With any luck, I can make morning yoga time a habit and become more flexible!

I've been a busy race registering squirrel!

In my boredom in Norway, I've decided to register for a few road races.  They are:

  • Running With The Wolves 10K in Marlborough, MA on July 28th @ 6:30PM
  • Loco Moose 5K in Concord, NH on August 29th @ 10AM
  • Disney World 5K in Orlando, FL on January 7th, 2011 @ 7AM
Apparently this year's Old Home Day in Barnstead has been canceled due to lack of interest or some such nonsense, so I will unfortunately not be able to run that race. :(  I've replaced it with the Loco Moose 5K in Concord, which is a "flat & fast" race.  With the August heat, I am only mildly concerned about how that race will turn out.  I'll simply have to start training in the hotter weather when I get back from Norway.

I've also signed up for a 10K which is making me a bit nervous. I know that I run at least 10K once a week during my regular training week, but I'm not sure I can complete it in any sort of competitive time.  I think I'll just have to settle for finishing it and not aim for a goal time.

The Disney 5K is six months away but I'm already excited.  I think it's going to be my first real vacation! I'm planning on visiting the parks, and hopefully the new Harry Potter park.  I think participants also get a goody bag for participating and there are seminars about training.  All in all, it should be a lot of fun and I'm greatly looking forward to it.

Serious lack of posts going on here!

Mostly due to work induced stress.  My company has sent me on a business trip to Norway, and I had to fly out here and drive to the work site all by my lonesome.  I was quite pleased with my bravery. I not only successfully made it through both flights (even though I managed a measly 2 hours of sleep the entire journey!), I also made it successfully to the work site via a neat little rented Toyota Prius.

I know jet lag affects everyone differently but daaaay-num, I am dead.  I've been here since Sunday at 3PM Norway time (that's 9AM EST) and I'm still not adequately recovered.  My throat is sore and my neck feels like I've been hunched into a container for days.  However, I did manage to get a minuscule 17 minutes of circuit training in.

One happy note though, I brought the love of my dietary life with me:

Now all I have to do is buy some bananer and peanøttsmør and this trip will be just a little better.

Second Annual Acton 5K Race Results

Second Annual Acton 5K Race Results

Finished in 28:29! That made me second in my age group, too bad I left before things were awarded. :(

    Calories Out: 268
    Net Calories:  1830

Exercise Minutes:  50 minutes of running, 5 minutes of walking to cooldown

I spent most of today's run wishing it would rain, it was so humid! I ran by a couple of geese, who fortunately were too involved eating worms or whatever it is that geese eat to honk and hiss at me. I love the solitude and peace of mind running affords me, I would run every single day if I could.  I ate over my set target today but I was very hungry at around 8 so I'm not overly concerned.  Tomorrow's weigh-in will still likely be around 125.

    The Squirrel Report: Wednesday 6/2/2010

    Calories In: 1824
    Calories Out: 174
    Net Calories: 1650

On the whole an excellent day, diet and fitness-wise but I can't help but feel a little down since I have to deal with all this car bullcrap.

    Calories In: More than 1500
    Calories Out:  Zero
    Net Calories:  More than 1500

Exercise Minutes: Does my heart racing from getting into a car accident count? It should, I think.

Gah, what a bad day.  I've got lady problems and then I get rear ended into a stopped car in front of me. Fortunately the police had stopped someone for speeding around this selfsame corner and saw the entire accident.  Everyone was okay, myself included and the teenager who rear ended me is completely at fault but it still sucks! Tomorrow will have to be better.

It was a decent day despite having a large lunch and too many tiny strawberry cupcakes later in the day.  I find it very difficult to stay on track when my routine is blasted by long weekends, I am going to have to work on making a strategy for them!  I didn't make it through a full circuit, I suspect I was still a little pooped from the race on Sunday.  My official time for the race is still pending but I'll be posting the results ASAP!
